Houses Moved to Estero Community Park

Donated to the Estero Historical Society by the College of Life

EDITOR, THE BANNER

Early on the morning of May 14, 2009, a dream was realized by the members of the Estero Historical Society. The Estero School House and the Hall-Collier House were relocated to the Estero Community Park. These historic buildings are approximately one hundred years old and an important part of the history of Estero.

It is without question that this move would not have been possible without the cooperation of many people. We want to thank the Lee County Commissioners, the Department of Community Development—Division of Planning, and the Lee County Parks Department and staff. You have made it possible to provide the people of Lee County with a link to the past.

We look forward to the refurbishing of the school house and having the children of Lee County visiting to discover the past. Donations will be greatly appreciated by the Estero Historical Society, P.O.Box 1314, Estero, Florida 33929.

Estero Historical Society

This historic old shool house and the Collier House next door have been donated to the Estero Historical Society by the College of Life. The President of the College of Life, Charles Dauray, has given the Society $100,000 to help pay for the moving of the Houses to the Estero Community Park. However, much more funding will be required for restoration. Exactly how will be determined by a top Historic Architect, Linda Stevenson who will develop a five year plan and budget. Lee County has given the Society a $30,000 grant to help pay Linda Stevenson.

 Stolen School Bell Found

The stolen school bell was found by  Tiffany Kuzawinski, a junior  at Estero High School while  jogging just outside the park.

Mission Statement

To learn, teach AND PRESERVE the history of Estero.

By our continuing efforts, we  hope to secure a rich historical legacy for future generations and a strong sense of community idendity.

Welcome to The Estero Historical Society's Web Page
                                                          ESTERO HISTORICAL SOCIETY
                                                             by Mary Ann Weenen, Pres.
We have so many things happening with our Society in the next two months,  I thought I would bring
you up to date.
On October 29th we will be going on a special group tour of the Koreshan State Park to update our
Society on all the restoration of the historic buildings that are currently being worked on.  This is a
timely topic for us because we will be using the same historic architect that the park has been using
namely Stevenson Architects.  We have signed a contract for the services of Linda Stevenson and
are hoping work will begin very soon.
As we go into November, the first thing we will be doing is sponsoring a continental breakfast for our
members and the people who drive antique rvs known as "tin cans".  That will be on November 3rd
in the Campgrounds at the Koreshan State Park.  The time will be 8:00am.  At 10:00am we will
have a table set up in the area of the Art Hall to sell our things.  Please join us there and help if
you can.
On November 8th we will be having our General Meeting at Estero Community Park.  Bob Baker
the Superintendent of the Koreshan State Park will be our guest speaker.  He will speak on
the acquisition of the Boomer acreage and other properties that the Park is in charge of.  It
should prove very interesting.  The time is 2:00pm in the meeting room at Estero Community
park.  One bit of information:  The park has 11,000 acres to be tended to and 11 rangers.
On November 11 through the 17th, we will be at the First Anniversary Celebration of Dillard's at
Coconut Point Mall in Estero.  We will have our setup right outside the front door that is by
Fashion Drive.  We already have permission to sell our Chutney, books, t-shirts and several
other things that we may bring with us.  We can use some volunteers for this occasion.  As you
know, the money is all going into our building fund which will help pay for architect services,
rehab and restoration of our own two historic buildings.
We get a little rest after that so we can all enjoy our Thanksgiving.  As we go into the Christmas
Holidays, we start to speed up again.  We will be at Border's Book Store at Gulf Coast mall on
two weekends, December 7th and 8th and again on December 14th and 15th.  We urgently need
volunteers to wrap gifts for us so we can get donations.  There will be 2 hour shifts, starting at
10:00am and finishing at 9:00pm.  If you can help out in any way, we would appreciate it.
One of our members, Carolyn Fischer is sponsoring a Sunset Cruise on December 17, 2007.
The cost is $35.00 per person.  This includes the cruise and an on board smorgasbord.  The
drinks are not included but you can bring your own libation on board with you.  We will board
the boat at 4:30pm at the end of Coconut Road at the West Bay boat ramp.
As of this writing, we are planning our Holiday Luncheon.  It will be finalized on Friday,
October 19th.
Another event in the planning stage, is our Annual High Tea.  We will hold it at the Embassy
Suites on March 3rd,2008.  It will be at 2:00pm.  Again, we would like to invite our Hostesses back
again to have a table and we look forward to having new Hostesses sign up.  The tables can be
for eight or ten.  I'm making another plea for volunteers to help sell tickets, sell raffles and many
other jobs such as collecting gifts from vendors etc.
If you can help on any of the above volunteer jobs, please contact me as soon as possible.
Please call me at 495-9761, Betty Shandor at 947-2346 or Sunny Molle at 910-3501.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, enjoy being together with family and/or friends and hopefully, I'll
see you at one of the exciting events mentioned above.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann.
